Shapes of Sleeping Bags

Mummy Sleeping Bags

Mummy sleeping bags are designed to be more thermally efficient, with a tapered shape that reduces the amount of air that needs to be heated. They also usually have hoods that can be cinched tight around the head to trap warmth. Mummy sleeping bags are best for cold weather camping and are usually more expensive than rectangular bags. Overall an excellent choice for those who do a lot of camping.

Rectangular Sleeping Bags

Rectangular sleeping bags are the most basic and traditional type of sleeping bag. They typically have a rectangular shape and are also quote roomy providing a lot of room for the user to move around and change positions while sleeping. They are also generally less expensive than other types of sleeping bags. Rectangular bags are also better for those warmer months as they aren’t going to contain your body heat as much as a mummy bag will.

Quilt Sleeping Bags

Quilt sleeping bags are similar to a traditional comforter you would use on a bed. They do not have a hood and are open on the bottom, which allow the user to move around more freely than in a traditional mummy bag, but they also tend to be less thermally efficient. These bags are lightweight and versatile, making them a good choice for backpacking and camping in mild weather.

Summary on Types of Sleeping Bags

Rectangular sleeping bags are the most roomy and are typically the least expensive.
Mummy bags are best for cold weather and are a little more expensive.
Quilt bags are lightweight, versatile and are good for mild weather.

FAQ: Choosing the Perfect Sleeping Bags for Big Guys

How do you choose the perfect size when buying sleeping bags for big guys?

The key is to finding the right size sleeping bag is to make sure the overall length is long enough and the width is wide enough to not just accommodate your height and width, but also give you some extra space so that you don’t feel like you’ve been squeezed into a sausage casing. You want to ensure you have enough room as well as some “breathing room” to ensure you sleep comfortably. When buying a sleeping bag for a tall or big guy, the best advice I can give you is to always look for the “XL”, “XXL” or “long” options. The extra large sizes are typically made larger both in width and in length giving you the space you need to feel comfortable. The manufacturer will also typically list the bags dimensions either in the product specifications or on the bag itself. If you’re looking for a bag that’s a little wider, look for a width of 30″ or more. If you’re requiring that extra length because you’re a tall dude, keep an eye out for those “long” bags.

Which shape should I look for when buying sleeping bags for big guys?

Well that all depends on your needs. If you have a wide shoulder girth and need something with a little more space, then a rectangular bag may be your best option. They are also great for the warm sleeper as they allow for more air movement throughout the bag itself. But if you’re looking to reduce warm air loss while you sleep, and keep yourself tightly contained, then the mummy shape is the best bag for you.

What should the ideal weight of your sleeping bag be for backpacking?

If you’re looking to do a lot of backpacking, the key is to keep your pack as light as possible. The lighter your sleeping bag, the less weight you will have to worry about carrying. Of course with that being said, there is a balance between the weight of the sleeping bag and the temperature it’s rated for. The insulation in your sleeping bag comes at a cost as the more insulation the bag contains, the more it weighs. I found that the sweet spot in terms of weight that met most backpackers’ requirements was around the 3-7lb mark. Just keep in mind, the bags that are rated for those cold temperatures usually weigh more than the bags that are rated for the more mild temperatures.

What is the best temperature rating you should look for in a sleeping bag?

Every sleeping bag is assigned a temperature rating. But be cautious when referencing the minimum temperatures, as what the manufacturer claims the bag to be rated for may differ when put to the test in the real world. Always look at a temperature range that sits below your intended use to ensure you’re covered well beyond the temperatures you expect to encounter. It’s also good practice to wear appropriate clothing before zipping yourself into your bag for the night. This may include socks, a thermal sweater, a warm hat, and more if your climate calls for it.

Which type of insulation fill should I choose?

The 2 most common choices are down-filled bag and synthetic bags.

Pros of choosing down filled: lightweight, compact, and are warmer than synthetic
Cons: More expensive and not as resistant to moisture.

Pros of choosing synthetic filled: Less expensive and more moisture resistant.
Cons: Tend to be heavier and bulkier as well as provide less insulation than down filled.

Final Thoughts on Sleeping Bags for Big Guys

In conclusion, the best sleeping bags for big guys depend on a variety of factors such as the size of the bag, the type of insulation, the fill material, and the environment in which it will be used. From lightweight synthetic bags to heavy-duty down bags, the options go on and on. Fortunately for all of you, there are a variety of great options on the market today. So regardless of whether you’re a tall person or a big guy, we hope this list of great sleeping bags has helped you choose the right one for your next adventure!
